Last week we prepared our splash station, and used a glass bowl to take some practice pictures of water-on-water splashes. We adjusted the flash placement, intensity, and filters until we received satisfactory lighting.

thisweekplan:

This week we plan to continue taking practice pictures of water-on-water splashes, this time using a different container and a close-up lens. We also plan to practice taking pictures of water-on-water splashes using food dyes to see if we will need to use a special method or piece of equipment to get better results.

outsideclass:

We need to obtain the new container (made by Eli).

progress:

So far, we have no reason to suspect that we will not meet our goal. We are moving at a steady pace and do not anticipate being short on time.

Identified problems with our first pictures (flash is too concentrated, splash residue on front of container is distracting)

thisweekplan:

Work with correcting problems from last week (altering distance between flash and screen, try to find way to reduce splash residue on front of container). We will also continue to take water on water splash pictures and start working with oil if we have time. 

outsideclass:

We will need to move lab time on Friday to different time since one of us will not be able to make it to class that day.

Equipment:

We do not anticipate any new equipment for our project this week.

progress:

We still expect to meet our goal by the end of the project period. We are still experimenting with adjusting equipment to get the best picture.

We took many more pictures of the water on water splashes, but did not have time to finish the water on water splashes or move on.

thisweekplan:

We plan to finish water on water splashes and move on to oil on water splashes. We will use slightly larger time intervals in order to more effectively use our time.

outsideclass:

Meet on Tuesday during A block/lab. We plan to meet outside of class to document photos.

We have not made as much progress as we had hoped because we are using such small time intervals between pictures. But we plan to adjust the time intervals so that we can reach our goal.

We finished taking water on water series pictures, updated our lab notebooks, and learned how to set up/use the apple 2 computer to set our time intervals.

thisweekplan:

We plan to start, and try to finish taking oil on water series pictures using the computer for our time interval delay. We will try to get about 50 pictures for this series instead of about 270 as we did for water on water due to time restrictions. 

outsideclass:

As we had been doing during the last few days of the water on water pictures, we will meet outside of class to document the photos that we take during the lab periods. We may also take time to record our observations on the water on water splash pictures.

Equipment:

We do not believe we will need any extra materials provided.

progress:

We expect to meet our original goal of seeing what happens to the original drop of water in the larger pool. We have had to make some modifications on expanding our time interval to meet this goal and we will probably also not be able to take as many series photos as we had originally planned.

Last week we took pictures of oil-on-water splashes and water-on-water splashes using food dye.

thisweekplan:

We need to retake the water-on-water (with dye) splash pictures because some of the ones from last week were out of focus.

outsideclass:

We need to continue documenting pictures outside of class to allow for more time to take pictures during class.

Equipment:

No extra materials are needed.

progress:

Our goal has been revised to not include using oil-on-water splashes in our analysis, because of time, the set of pictures that we are working on will be the last. We think this will still be enough to draw some conclusions on our question.
